Born and raised in rural Southeast Missouri the artist grew up with a love of nature and an appreciation for the simple life. While earning a BFA in painting and printmaking Monteith was the sole worker for the University Museum, learning a wealth of knowledge in every aspect of museum studies. Upon graduating Monteith moved to California and has spent the last 30 years being an advocate for the arts. From Los Angeles to the Joshua Tree National Park communities Monteith operated and curated for numerous galleries and art institutions. He is currently living and working in Southeast Missouri where he is continuing to foster the local art scene.

He is best known for his vibrant and iconic paintings of desert wildlife and watercolor landscapes of the desert Southwest. Current works depict Missouri wildlife and imagery. His award-winning paintings and portraits have been exhibited throughout the US and are included in many public and private collections worldwide. Monteith's work has been included in numerous magazines and publications including the New York Times, The American Free Journal and Journey, a collection of poetry and short stories. He has worked on projects that have appeared at Art Basel in Miami Beach, Burning Man in Nevada and the Whitney Museum in New York.
